Frequently Asked Questions

STARTING THERAPY CAN FEEL INTIMIDATING

Let's make that part a little easier.

Below, you’ll find answers to some of the questions you may be wondering about, from what to expect in a first session to scheduling, confidentiality, and everything in between.

And remember, you don’t have to have it all figured out before you start. We’ll go at a pace that feels right for you, and you can always ask questions along the way.

What is a first session like?

During your first session, you'll find a space with comfortable seating, blankets, and fidget tools to help you feel at ease. We will move entirely at your pace—if you are ready to dive right into what is on your mind, we can do that, but if you want to take things slow and ease into it, that is completely fine too.

I will always follow your lead, respect your comfort level, and let you decide how much you want to share.

How do I know if we're a good fit?

Finding the right therapist isn’t always an instant “click.” Sometimes it takes a few sessions to feel comfortable enough to open up and really settle into the process. What matters most is that, over time, you feel heard, understood, and like you can be yourself.

My goal is to create a relaxed, flexible space where we can talk honestly, ask questions, and even use a little humor when it feels right. And if, after giving it a try, you decide I’m not the right fit, that’s okay, too. There are no hard feelings. I’ll gladly help you find someone who may be a better match for what you need.

Do you offer virtual, in-person, or hybrid therapy?

All three! I know that balancing therapy with work, school, and everything else on your plate can be a lot, so I keep things flexible. We can meet virtually, in person, or switch between the two depending on your schedule and what feels right for you.

I offer therapy and support to individuals throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

What is your fee and insurance policy?

I currently accept BCBS, United Health, Optum and Harvard Pilgrim insurance.  My biller will confirm that I accept your specific insurance before we begin so there will be no surprises.

I also offer private pay and a sliding scale based on financial need.  Please email me for more information regarding self pay or superbills.

Under the law, healthcare providers must supply uninsured or self-pay clients with an estimate of expected charges for mental health services and psychotherapy.

  • You are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate covering non-emergency services, including psychotherapy, evaluations, and related costs.

  • Upon request, providers must provide this estimate in writing at least one business day before your scheduled appointment.

  • Bills exceeding your estimate by $400 or more may be disputed.

  • Retain a copy or photo of your estimate for your records.

What is your confidentiality policy?

Your privacy is incredibly important to me.  Everything you share in our therapy sessions (including the fact that you are a client) is strictly confidential. Your information is protected following all state laws and federal HIPAA guidelines.

We will not share your information with your parents, your partner, your employer, or anyone else without your explicit, written permission.

There are some exceptions to confidentiality, which will be outlined in your intake paperwork, such as immediate danger to yourself, immediate danger to someone else, or abuse of a vulnerable person (as defined by law).

How long does therapy usually take?

The length of your therapy depends entirely on you and your specific goals. There is no one-size-fits-all timeline because every situation requires a different level of support.

We will regularly check in to see how you are feeling and adjust our time together based on your progress.  Some people can feel like they get what they need within a few months and some have been with me for years.

Can I bring a family member or partner to a session?

Yes, absolutely. If having a family member or partner join you would be helpful to your therapy, we can talk about it together and make a plan that works for everyone. I’ll just need a signed release of information, which we can discuss and complete during a session.

What's your scheduling and cancellation policy?

Consistent attendance helps you get the most out of therapy. Because your appointment time is reserved specifically for you, cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice or missed appointments may be charged at the full session fee. This fee is your responsibility and is not billed to your insurance company.

Exceptions may be made for illness or an unavoidable emergency. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please reach out as soon as possible.

What if I have more questions?
